As we read the Gospels it quickly becomes clear that Jesus spent a lot of time with people on the fringes of society. Isn't that stunning? Jesus, the One and Only Son of God, goes against the normal human tendency to chase affirmation, influence, and even power at the center of the community. Instead, he seeks those that society deems weaker; the less acceptable or flawed. Jesus knows they bear the image of God; he sees them, hears them, encourages them, and even touches them to bring hope and healing. If we are followers of Jesus, we are called to follow him into the fringes as well. So, for Lent, we look to Jesus in the margins.
