Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few questions and answers that we have anticipated in light of Pastor Bruce’s recent announcement of his plan to retire in January, 2018.
What’s the plan for the Search Process?
Governing Elders have already begun to lay a foundation for a search for someone to partner with Pastor Bob in the leadership of CLC. We are developing a profile of the pastor that we will be looking for and will soon create a profile of Covenant Life Church which will be used in the search process.
What kind of person are we looking to call?
We want someone who has spiritual gifts in leadership, experience in a large church setting, and is a gifted communicator. Such a person will become Co-pastor with Pastor Bob. A full profile will soon be found on this website.
Will we have an interim pastor?
Some of you may remember the role that Pastor Case VanKempen played after Pastor Andy DeJong left in 2005. However, our situation today is quite different from then. We have leadership on site with Pastor Bob, and we have a gifted staff that is engaged in ministry. We have hired a consultant familiar with Covenant Life, Jack Lynn of Clear Vision, to help us in the search process. We will rely on Pastor Bob, our Director of Worship and Arts Chris Walker, and other guest preachers to lead us on Sunday during the transition time.
What is the time-line?
We will be recruiting and forming the Search Team by the end of June. During the summer months we will organize and orient the team to its work. In the fall, the search will begin in earnest. It is our hope and prayer that someone will be called and installed late spring or early summer, 2018. A more detailed timeline can be found here.
How will we get the word out about our opening?
We will publicize the position in a variety of ways: primarily by word of mouth and pursuing recommended candidates. We will do some advertising, use social media, solicit names from CLC members, and ask respected ministry leaders to recommend candidates. In addition, the CRC’s Ministerial Information Service has a database of pastors and a team of leaders who can recommend candidates to us.
Will the congregation get a voice in the selection?
The plan is that the search team will recommend a candidate or candidates to the Governing Elders. Candidate(s), upon Elder approval, will be presented to the congregation. Then the congregation will be asked to participate as our final candidate is presented, preaches, and visits the community and Covenant Life. Members will be asked to vote to affirm the elder’s recommendation to the congregation.
What can we do now?
Pray. Please be in prayer for Pastor Bruce and Pat as they transition into retirement, and pray for Pastor Bob and the staff as they go through transitions. Pray for the search process, that God will clearly lead. Finally, pray for the new pastor and family as God prepares their hearts and minds to come here.
Can I suggest a name?
Once the search team is formed and the search process kicks into gear in the fall, you will be able to make suggestions on the pastor search website.
