Frequently Asked Questions& Co-Pastor Referral FormSeptember Update
Here are a few questions and answers that we have anticipated in light of Pastor Bruce’s recent announcement of his plan to retire in January, 2018.
Where are we in the Pastor Search Process?
The Governing Elders appointed a Pastor Search Team in June that has been meeting over the summer. Their early activities have included identifying prayer partners for each member, acquainting themselves with the Co-Pastor and Covenant Life Church profiles written for the search, determining where and how we will advertise for this position, and developing the procedures and methods for interacting with candidates, both those who apply and those we pursue.
What kind of person are we looking to call?
We are looking for a pastor with gifts in preaching, leadership, and experience in a large church setting. A leader who will Co-pastor with Pastor Bob as they together provide leadership for CLC. A detailed profile is available here.
Why a Co-Pastor?
Pastor Bruce and Pastor Bob have effectively led our church, elders, and staff in this way for the past 10 years. Although they each have individual areas of leadership and responsibility, they collaborate, consult, decide, and lead together in all areas of our ministry. The Organizational Chart reflects this relationship well as does the Co-Pastor Profile which describes the position. The Governing Elders believe that this leadership arrangement, while somewhat unique, has greatly benefited CLC and enabled our large ministry and staff to thrive.
Will someone be here by the time Pastor Bruce leaves?
It’s doubtful someone will be here by the time Pastor Bruce leaves. Thankfully, we have leadership on site with Pastor Bob, and we have a gifted staff that is engaged in ministry. We have hired a consultant familiar with Covenant Life, Jack Lynn of Clear Vision, to help us in the search process. We will rely on Pastor Bob, Chris Walker, and other staff and guest preachers to lead us on Sunday during the transition time.
What is the time-line?
During the summer months we organized and oriented the team for its work. This fall the search begins in earnest. The opening will be made public in mid-September. It is our hope and prayer that someone will be called and installed late spring or early summer, 2018. A more detailed timeline can be found here.
How will we get the word out about our opening?
We will publicize the position in a variety of ways: but primarily by word of mouth and pursuing recommended candidates. We will also do some advertising, use social media, solicit names from CLC members, and ask respected ministry leaders to recommend candidates. In addition, the CRC’s Ministerial Information Service has a database of pastors and a team of leaders who can recommend candidates to us.
Will the congregation get a voice in the selection?
The search team has been asked to recommend a candidate to the Governing Elders. This candidate, upon Elder approval, will be presented to the congregation. The congregation will be asked to participate in a weekend of activities as the candidate arrives, preaches, and visits the community and Covenant Life church. Members will be asked to vote to affirm the elder’s recommendation to the congregation.
What can we do now?
Pray. Please be in prayer for Pastor Bruce and Pat as they transition into retirement, and pray for Pastor Bob and the staff as they prepare for the transitions ahead. Pray for the search process and our search team members. You can find information on each search team member on the Pastor Search page. Finally, pray for the new pastor and family as God prepares their hearts and minds to come here.
Can I suggest a name?
Yes! First, please read through the Co-Pastor Profile to acquaint yourself with the qualities and characteristics we are looking for in our next leader. If you know of someone you believe has the experience, character, and qualities described here, please submit their name, where they are currently serving, and how you believe they match the profile written for the Co-pastor position.
